Global temperatures approximately 1.46°C above pre-industrial levels, our oceans reaching record-high heat content, and 37.4 billion metric tons of CO₂ released from human fossil fuel usage in 2024. It’s clear that climate change is one of the defining challenges of our time. It is a problem that has existed since the first Industrial Revolution but has exponentially grown over the past few decades with the US being one of the biggest contributors. Contrary to immediate thought, lack of scientific innovation is not the primary obstacle. Researchers across our country are developing technologies that can reduce emissions, remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and create more sustainable energy systems.
The challenge is scale.
Many promising solutions remain confined to laboratories because of barriers such as funding constraints, infrastructure requirements, market competition, regulatory challenges, and shifting priorities. Scientific breakthroughs alone are not enough to create widespread impact.
Sustainability Beyond the Lab explores the gap between discovery and deployment. Through interviews with scientists from various fields in sustainable science, I highlight both the innovations being developed and the real-world challenges that determine whether those innovations can transform society. My goal is to help the public understand not only the science of climate solutions, but also what it takes to bring those solutions to scale.
